Great Video. Could you tell me if the electric choke piece is interchangeable between the 3 carburetor's. I looking to update my 28 pict to 12 volt ?
Greetings from Palermo. Just got a yellow 1978.
Nice! I grew up in Chelsea and my best friend in High School lived in Palermo
@@MaineMachinist Hey if you have a moment I’m trying to adjust the carb on mine and don’t understand how to adjust the idle? Do you? Seems like the screw should do it but it doesn’t..
My only recommendation woulda been to test "new" conventional gear oil after draining the old. Then testing the synthetic. Would've been nice to see all 3 results.
👍
With any test it is best to have only one variable. The different cover materials could affect cooling, and the volume of fluid may also have been different since the original cover was leaking. Still, it was an interesting result with a much larger temperature difference than I expected.
The new steel differential cover might be helping with better cooling comparing to the composite material.
Excellent video. Just bought a used one and even though it runs like a champ the guy said he replaced all the filters and performed an oil change over the phone; once he delivered it nothing had been done. So, yes, great deal (126 hours) great running but now I get to replace all the filters and oil change, spark plug etc.
Thank you for watching! I have a spark plug video as well. I’m sure it will still be a great machine for you.
Hey what were the results of you using that Mobile 1 and that Castrol Diesel oil ?
You do realize that you're never supposed to run a manual trans starter without it being installed. Not having the shaft supported will tear things apart inside
Not going to be an issue for the very limited time this test is being performed. They test these every day in factories and repair shops on a bench setup without a starter bushing. But if you have concerns, just don’t do it
@@MaineMachinist Just something I was taught by an old auto electric guy years ago. He said to never run them unsupported.
very helpful video, why does the throttle need to be in a wide open position? many thanks!
To allow the engine to draw the maximum amount of air during the test Thanks for watching!
@@MaineMachinist thanks for clarifying man ✌️
Not just Honda ATC but any ATC
Very true
Thank you so much man, I couldn’t ever figure out why mine would just quit working but this helps SO much
Awesome! I hope it solves your problem! Thanks for watching!
Where do you get your headstock bearing from?
Timken bearings. You can source them just about anywhere.
Very good explanation. Where are you located in Maine. I am in nh and may need some work in the future
I’m way up at the end of the highway. Last stop of I95…. But UPS delivers! :-)
That. Was helpful
Hope you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
Hello,is that the sunnen book your getting specs from or another book?
This is the Chilton Manual for BMW 2 Valve Boxers
👍
Thank you for watching, as always!
No electronics . only daily trash use products lol
Just stop driving these old dogs.
They’ll never die
Idea on how to reset the change oil indicator? I changed oil and air filter just curious how to reset that.
First of all great video, thank you!! Here in Las Vegas where it's a bit warm I do run the Valvoline VR1 20/50. Porsche 1.8l I chose the Valvoline VR because it claims to have two times zinc❤ 2 times what I don't know. Now I think I see Valvoline also produces VR1 in a synthetic and that interests me. Because, not to get into any kind of arguing or fighting but I think if the oil geek says it, it is so.
Thank you for the information! Sounds like you have a good plan for your area and climate!
Thank you for this excellent video, I am a 70 y.o woman I was able to follow the steps, better video than the Cub cadet , thank you again
Wow! I am so happy to hear this! Thank you for your kind words and for watching. I’m so glad I could help you.
If it is the same as my "garage" caliper the slide for the depth indicator is not stainless. It needs some oil to keep it from corroding.
Good to know!
I wonder how this compares to a shars
Good question. I've never personally bought a SHARS measuring tool
I have one of those calipers.
I’m going to keep it for doing stuff outside and for quick measurements that don’t need to be super accurate. Can’t beat $32 really. Just can’t count on it for super precision
@@MaineMachinist The HF units are cheaper, I think.
digital calipers are not accurate anyway, that one is better then most .... better than my mitutoyo ...... fit and finish is another matter.
Oof. That’s rough. I’ve never seen anything this bad lol
I had a vintage set of Brown and Sharpe Swiss Made dial calipers that would read absolutely spot on ever time
After 20 years of using them I finally dropped them and they broke
I have a friend with a 71 super beetle with the factory 1300cc single port engine. Can dual port heads (with a dual port intake manifold) be bolted directly to the 1300cc engine?
If the dual port heads are also 1300, yes they can.
@MaineMachinist ahhh, ok, thank you sir. I thought all 1300cc were single port heads. What year 1300's used dual port heads? Not a common accurance is it?
16:54 isn't the 3.5 thou vs 5 thou just the v block being at 45 degrees? assuming it's also 3.5 on the other side of the v, 3.5 * sqrt(2) is 4.94 thou. you'd probably also get that if you positioned the indicator moving vertical instead of measuring tangent to the way
Similarly 5 * sqrt(2) is 7.07 (I guess duh 3.5 is half of 7). why there's 0.002" between measuring tailstock to carriage ways and carriage to tailstock, I have no idea
Thank you sir fixed my problem
Glad to hear it! You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
I only use KLOTZ R-50 , my generator has 14,968 hours on it.
Wow!
I have an lt42b, goid luck with getting to the quick drain. Some genius put the wiring harness, on the frame, about an inch and a half away from the quick drain. The wires are heavily pressing down on the quick drain, making it extremely difficult to turn and pull out the drain. Other than that changing the oil was normal.
That’s discouraging!
Great video brother, thank you!
Thanks for the encouragement!
This was an awesome video! I have never done a compression test, and now I've saved this for when I have to. Right now my issue on my 79 FI bus is that he wont idle, unless the brake assist hose is pulled out. Then the idle is rough. Worked great up until about a week ago. Have checked and cleaned all the wires, teste the 3 & 4 FI with a noid, and evertyhing is working. Just haven't tried fuel pressure test. Have you got a video for that? :)
My 70 bug is provided 20w50. I do not drive in the winter months
Thanks for sharing!
I run Mobil 1 15w-50 in a 65 Mustang with a 302 bored and stroked to a 331. I use the Mobil 1 because it as the appropriate amount of ZDDP in the oil for cars with flat tappet cams. I would assume the same oil would work well in our 74 Super Beetle with a pretty much stock 1600. I live in southern Arizona, and we don't get the crazy heat of Phoenix, but it's not unusual to get over 100* in the summer here and in the low 20's with the occasional dips down into the teens in the winters.
Thanks for sharing! ZDDP is definitely important!
How do I get the handle to open I can’t pop the things off the top and bottom
Mine simply snaps together so there’s no faster. I used a small flat head screwdriver to pop it open
Hello, I made the 57mm clearance but now the opening is way too big !! When you now put the clearanced 12V flyweel on you're crankshaft without using the 4 dowel pins, you will feel that the flyweel has a lot of play. If you measure you're crankshaft it is 53.4 mm at the frontside and 54.7 mm behind the step. So I think that the 57 and a quarter mm clearance must be 54,7 mm. Correct me if i'm wrong. But still a great video.
Y
What size bearings ?
I agree,no power from live centre, only by hand when reaming this as this taper and anything under 7degrees(3.5 off of spindle axis) is designed for locking in place.1st light ream with dead centre taper extended and locked then halfway out and locked then fully retracted and locked to correct for misaligned.Surface Hardness maintained for 0.254mm or 10"thou of inch.Just under 40"/1.0mm.Make sure spindle bearings warmed up for less live centre clearances and lightest oiled cuts possible.
Just want to let you know that the exhaust rear heat shield was installed backward therefore there is a gap between the two heat shield.
Good catch thank you
You are the man
Hope it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Dude, for $10 on sale, not a bad buy. I grabbed a set a few weeks ago. Good variety of sizes. Not the “cool” bits bit they work fine for my DIY projects and keep some money in my pocket.
They’re excellent for home owner DIY applications, or for when you need to sacrifice a drill without worrying about ruining an expensive one. Thanks for watching! Please subscribe, like and share these videos!
Thanks for this. I had the same problem with a unit my buddy gave me, and wasn't sure how to take the handle apart. I still messed up the rings getting them to turn loose, must have been baked on pretty good, but mission accomplished. I was going to ask my buddy if he had any issues with the gun, but what if he wants it back now that it works?
Glad it was a help!
Very small valve thing lol, what is it called?
Thank you for the video. Helped a lot with you providing the measurements. Will save me some time and headache.
Glad to hear it!
Add liquid moly anti fiction too your oil
Great video... So many have no idea how important this is... Thank you !
Thanks for watching!
Please do video 4 and 5
This is harden not case harden. Case harden is a slow process done in a carbon controlled furnace for a controlled case depth and even case.
Wrong.
@@MaineMachinist explain please. I’ve been case hardening parts for 25+ years for all major approvals Boeing, Rolls, Lockheed. The work that I run is flight safety critical jobs that need approval, Lab work and 100% inspection. I guess all major source is incorrect and you and the garage setup is correct. Please explain, I can’t wait for this.
@@josels1292 I didn’t realize the clown car unloaded. The circus isn’t even in town. This product is CHERRY RED: CASE HARDENING COMPOUND. A first year high school trades student is familiar with this form of case hardening. You might want to book a class soon.
@@MaineMachinist WRONG!!! Stop putting false information please. This is clearly not case hardening. Please go work in a real heat treat shop and learn before trying to teach.
